Introduction to Weapons of Mass Destruction

  • Recognize the basic threats associated with chemical and biological agents, radiological, nuclear, and high yield explosive (CBRNE) threats that militaries, terrorists and criminals may utilize

Classroom-based, this course centers on the various types of agents, precursors, toxicity levels, contamination considerations and the physiological and psychological effects that these substances have on personnel and property. Realistic WMD threats are discussed throughout this course in order to demystify myths involving these very real concerns. This course reviews the types of WMD dissemination devices and their capabilities and limitations. The methods and historical use of dissemination devices is analyzed to allow a process for recognition and identification of potential devices. An introductory overview of domestic and worldwide terrorist organizations and WMD threats is described in digestible terms and related to the geography and confines of your environment. Terrorist methodologies and tactics are evaluated including case studies of specific groups such as Aum Shinrikyo, Islamic Jihad and the Irish Republican Army (add domestic flavor). The history of terrorist activities is reviewed in the context of how and why future attacks may occur.
