EOD Electronics Training and IED Training Aids

Improvised Electronics EOD electronics training and IED training aids

Improvised Electronics is the leading provider of EOD electronics training, IED training aids, and battlefield effects simulation systems for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) professionals, bomb technicians, and Counter-IED (C-IED) training programs worldwide. Founded in 2009 by Jeff Jennings, an electronics instructor and technician from the Advanced IED Defeat course at Eglin AFB, our mission is to give EOD technicians the electronics knowledge and hands-on tools they need to defeat the device.

What We Do

We design, engineer, and manufacture specialized EOD electronics and training equipment at our facility in San Diego, CA. Every product we build, from IED circuit boards and IED training aids to blast simulators and electronic components, is purpose-built for the EOD and C-IED training community.

Our product line includes:

  • IED Circuit Boards – Over 20 custom-designed PCBs covering SCR, MOSFET, DTMF, PIC microcontroller, RF remote, and timer-based firing circuits used in EOD electronics training worldwide.
  • IED Training Aids – Realistic training devices including command wire IEDs, RC-IEDs, suicide vests, pressure plate systems, and photocell-initiated devices for scenario-based C-IED training.
  • Battlefield Effects Simulators – The MK-17X blast simulator, BOOMBOX, AK-47 and .50 cal machine gun simulators, and propane/oxygen systems engineered for durability, reliability, and ease of use.
  • EOD Tool Kits & Circuit Boards – Complete electronics sustainment kits, sensor modules, Arduino platforms, and discrete components for unit-level EOD training programs.
  • Inert Ordnance & 3D-Printed Training Devices – AOTM mine replicas, inert munitions, and downloadable STL files for on-demand fabrication of training props.

Blast Simulation & Live Training Systems

Dissatisfied with the value proposition of existing blast and automatic weapons simulation systems, Jeff Jennings engineered the MK-17X propane/oxygen blast simulator, a durable, reliable, and easy-to-use system that exceeds the performance of anything else available. Our live training systems include a lightweight, feature-rich range instrumentation platform that delivers flexible operator control and objective after-action reviews (AARs) at a fraction of the cost of larger systems.

IED Electronics Training Courses

Our IED electronics training courses are built around the principle that EOD technicians must understand the fundamental electronics behind IED firing systems to make actionable threat assessments. We offer multiple formats to fit your unit’s needs:

  • EOD Electronics Courses – Comprehensive hands-on instruction covering DC theory, Ohm’s Law, semiconductors, IED circuit analysis, wire diagnostics, and circuit board construction. Available as 5-day and 10-day onsite MTTs or online training formats.
  • EOD Maker Platform – Our digital resource hub with circuit build guides, reference materials, and the EOD Maker Library giving technicians access to schematics, theory, and step-by-step build instructions.
  • Arduino & Microcontroller Training – Specialized courses including Arduino Bootcamp for EOD, Eagle CAD for EOD, and EOD 3D Printing that teach technicians to prototype, program, and fabricate custom training equipment.
  • Online EOD Training – Self-paced and live-proctored online courses including circuit builds, DC electronics fundamentals, and microcontroller programming accessible to individual students and unit training packages.

Company History

In 2009, Jeff Jennings founded Improvised Electronics from his garage to support the Counter-IED training needs of the EOD community. Building on his experience at the electronics shop and training center of the Advanced IED School at Eglin AFB, Jeff designed and engineered custom IED training aids to meet the advanced and highly specified needs of military and law enforcement clients, and developed robust IED electronics training courses to share his unique skill set with the next generation of C-IED trainers.

Driven by a need for better tools, Jeff turned his attention to engineering propane/oxygen blast simulators that integrate seamlessly with our training aid systems. The result is the MK-17X, a durable, reliable, and easy-to-use battlefield effects system that exceeds the performance of anything else available and provides clear value to any EOD training range.

To complete this holistic offering, Jeff developed a lightweight but feature-rich range instrumentation system that gives operators flexible control and objective AARs at a fraction of the price of larger systems. We actively seek projects to instrument training equipment with next-generation radio communication for seamless integration with modern range systems.

Our Facility & Capabilities

Our San Diego facility supports product fabrication and assembly, R&D and prototyping, and custom engineering for defense sector clients. From IED circuit board production and 3D printing to complete EOD training kit assembly, we handle every step in-house. We continually seek creative and collaborative solutions to the evolving challenges faced by our armed forces and the defense industry.
