What this is
One seat, self-paced, online. You start with a box of loose components and finish with a flyable 5-inch FPV aircraft that you built, configured and tuned yourself. The aircraft is yours to keep.
The course is the same build we run on site for EOD units, recorded start to finish. You work at your own pace, on your own bench, and you rewind the parts you need to see twice. If you have never soldered a flight controller, you will have by the end of the first module.
Why it costs $2,999
That number is deliberate. It includes the kit, the radio, the goggles, the batteries, the tools and CONUS freight — so it lands under a $3,000 purchase-card limit as a single transaction. No contracting officer, no purchase order, no split payment. One swipe.
Office hours
Self-paced does not mean on your own. Live office hours run on a recurring schedule where you bring whatever is in front of you — a board that will not bind, a motor that spins the wrong way, a stack you are not sure you soldered correctly — and we work it out on camera. Bring the aircraft, not just the question.
Every enrolled student has standing access to office hours for the life of the course. There is no cohort to miss and no date to reschedule around.
What ships to you
- Airframe and avionics — 5″ carbon frame, four 2307 motors, NDAA-compliant flight controller and 4-in-1 ESC, video transmitter, FPV camera, ELRS diversity receiver, antenna, props and hardware
- Control and video — ELRS pocket radio and 5.8 GHz analog goggles
- Power — two 6S LiPo packs, balance charger, XT60 pigtail, straps, inline smoke stopper
- Build tools — temperature-controlled soldering iron, solder and flux, hex drivers, cutters, tweezers
- Trainer components — reed switch, tilt switch, magnet, MOSFET and capacitors for the switching block
Everything is on your bench before you start. Nothing to source, nothing to chase.
The modules
Build. Frame assembly, motor and ESC soldering, flight controller stack, power distribution, smoke test.
Configure. Firmware, receiver binding, VTX setup, failsafes, rates, and a full pre-flight check.
Fly and troubleshoot. First flights, tuning, damage assessment, field repair, and the failure modes you will actually see.
Who it is for
EOD technicians, public-safety bomb squads, and anyone who has to understand how these aircraft are put together — because the ones you encounter downrange were built by somebody at a bench exactly like this. You do not need prior soldering experience. You do need a work surface and an outlet.
Practical notes
- Shipping: CONUS only at this price. LiPo batteries ship ground, so allow about two weeks from order to delivery.
- OCONUS: we can deliver the course, but batteries and spectrum authorisation are handled by your unit. Contact us for a quote.
- Flying: airspace authorisation is your responsibility. The aircraft is a standard sUAS.
- Access: course access begins as soon as your kit ships. Start whenever you are ready.

Component substitution notice
Components are specified by capability, not by brand. Product names and photographs are representative of the class of item supplied.
Supply in this market moves quickly. Frames, flight controllers, instruments and tooling go out of stock, get revised, or are discontinued without notice. Improvised Electronics reserves the right to substitute any component based on availability, and will do so with an item that meets or exceeds the published specification for that line. We do not downgrade a kit to hold a price.
Where a specification is contract-critical — NDAA or TAA compliance, a required interface, or a standard your unit must certify against — tell us before you order and we will confirm the exact part in writing on your quote.
