Description

2-Week sUAS Construction, Autonomy & Exploitation Course

This 2-week Mobile Training Team (MTT) course extends the 1-week Build Class with full ArduPilot autonomous operation, render-safe-approach training platforms (persistent ground-state and X-ray-layered builds), and hands-on forensics & data exploitation. Bench equipment is upgraded to prosumer-grade and stays at your unit after the course — equipping a permanent EOD electronics shop, not just running a class.

Built for HDS-trained bomb technicians whose mission set now includes sUAS render-safe, post-blast exploitation, and counter-drone planning. Public safety bomb squads, military EOD units, and federal teams use this curriculum to bring their shop’s organic capability to parity with the threat.

Course Structure

Week 1 — Foundational Electronics & Drone Build (1-Week Build Class in full)

  • Day 1: Electronics refresher, soldering, multimeter, LiPo safety
  • Day 2: Improvised initiation systems integrated into drone circuitry
  • Day 3: Drone build — frame, power, motors, ESC
  • Day 4: Drone build — FC, RX, VTX, camera, RF link configuration
  • Day 5: Payload integration, improvised switch wiring, range day

Week 2 — Autonomy, Persistent Ground-State, & Exploitation

  • Day 6 — Autonomous Flight Controller Foundations. Open-source autonomy flight controller with integrated GPS, ground-control software (Mission Planner), sensor calibration, GPS lock, 915 MHz telemetry radio. One autonomous platform per student.
  • Day 7 — Autonomous Mission Planning. Waypoint missions, RTL/failsafe, geofence, terrain-following. Loitering and one-way-attack mission profiles. SITL pre-flight then field validation.
  • Day 8 — Persistent Ground-State / X-Ray-Layered Drones. Build two render-safe-approach training platforms: one with active props and cycling gimbal post-landing, one layered for X-ray interpretation training (internals laid out for a teachable portable-X-ray image).
  • Day 9 — Forensics & Data Exploitation. Pull Betaflight blackbox via USB, ArduPilot dataflash logs, identify FCs and MCUs visually and via JTAG/SWD, SD card recovery, telemetry decode, ELRS/Crossfire bind-info extraction.
  • Day 10 — Capstone + Range. Multi-platform scenario: students fly an autonomous mission, recover a crashed platform, exploit it for forensics. Wrap-up + AAR.

What’s Included

  • 10 complete Week-1 student build kits (per the 1-Week Build Class)
  • 10 autonomy upgrade kits (integrated open-source flight controller + GPS combo board, 915 MHz telemetry radio set, 1080p digital FPV video transmitter and camera) — runs on the same 5″ airframe students built in Week 1 with open-source autonomy firmware in place of the freestyle firmware used in Week 1
  • 5 sets of 1080p digital FPV goggles (1 per pair of students; pair-based use is the standard digital-FPV training-room layout)
  • 3 shared classroom lidar / optical-flow demo modules (TFmini-S + ADNS-3080) for GPS-denied flight concept
  • 10 prosumer-grade bench stations — stays at your unit after the course:
    • Temperature-controlled soldering station (60W)
    • Hot-air rework station
    • Bench multimeter (auto-range)
    • Variable bench PSU (0–30 V, 0–5 A)
    • Pocket scope / logic analyzer
    • ESD mat, helping-hands, tweezers, cutters, consumables
  • X-ray-layered training-platform CAD package (IE in-house design)
  • Forensics tool kit (USB/UART/SWD adapters, SD card recovery, JTAG)
  • Printed lab guides + curriculum materials + STL files + Mission Planner profiles
  • Lead instructor × 2 weeks, travel + lodging + per-diem to RAF Lakenheath / your unit (2-instructor upgrade available)
  • APO shipping consolidated through Improvised Electronics San Diego
  • Post-course AAR + digital training reference package
